“G” is short for Geländewagen, German for “cross-country vehicle”. It was built for off-road, rough terrain from the very start.
It officially launched in 1979. Development started earlier in the 1970s via a partnership between Mercedes-Benz and Steyr-Daimler-Puch in Austria.
The AMG version (such as G63) does 0-100 km/h in about 4.5 seconds or similar. Less powerful versions are slower.
Square, upright design; round headlights; exposed hinges; flat surfaces; minimal curves. It has stayed visually similar across generations so people easily recognize it. That consistency builds identity.
